Aging Is Not the Problem — Inflammation Is

If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me that having aches and pains, not being able to walk or get up from a chair, or being tired all of the time is all part of aging I would be rich. Well maybe not rich but maybe I could treat my hubby to an expensive vacation!

In the almost 2 decades of studying nutrition and understanding its effects on our bodies, I want to state something straight out of the gate:

👉 Getting older is not the enemy. 👉 Inflammation is.

Aging is just the number of birthdays you’ve had.Inflammation is what makes your joints ache, your energy crash, your brain feel foggy, and your body feel older than it actually is.

    And here’s the good news:

✨ Inflammation is influenced by what you eat and how you live.✨ Aging is not a personal failure.

So, let’s stop blaming age and start understanding what’s really going on.

What is inflammation (in plain English)?

Inflammation is your body’s built-in alarm system.  It’s helpful when:

    • You get a cut

    • You fight off an infection

    • You sprain an ankle

But it becomes a problem when the alarm never turns off. That’s called chronic inflammation, and it can quietly affect your:

    • Energy

    • Mood

    • Sleep

    • Brain clarity

    • Hormone balance

    • How “old” your body feels

Why inflammation gets blamed on aging

As we get older, inflammation can increase, but not because aging is broken. It’s often because we move less, we’re more stressed, we sleep worse, we eat more ultra-processed foods and we eat less fiber.  So, inflammation rises… and aging gets blamed.

It’s a classic case of mistaken identity.

Inflammation can look like “getting old”

Here’s what chronic inflammation can feel like:

    • “Why am I so tired?”

    • “Why do my joints hurt now?”

    • “Why is my brain so foggy?”

    • “Why do I feel achy for no reason?”

Many people chalk this up to aging — but inflammation is often the real culprit.

Food matters (but not in a scary way)

You don’t need a cleanse, a detox, or a cabinet full of supplements. You need food that calms the system instead of poking it.

Foods that tend to lower inflammation include:

    ·      Fiber-rich plants (beans, lentils, veggies, fruit)

    ·      Whole grains

    ·      Nuts and seeds

    ·      Simple, minimally processed meals

Foods that tend to raise inflammation when eaten often:

    • Ultra-processed foods

    • Refined sugars and flours

    • Constant blood sugar spikes

No food is “bad.” But patterns matter.

Fiber: the unsung hero of healthy aging

Why is fiber the unsung hero of healthy aging?  Because fiber helps:

    • Feed gut bacteria

    • Reduce inflammatory signals

    • Support blood sugar balance

    • Improve mood and digestion

And most adults, especially women over 40, are not getting enough of it.  And I’m not talking about a fiber supplement.  I’m talking about real, whole foods.  This is one of the simplest ways to support your body as you age… without extremes.

Inflammation and your brain (yes, that too)

Inflammation doesn’t just live in your joints.  It also affects your mood, anxiety levels, your focus and your sleep quality and quantity.  That’s because inflammation talks directly to your brain through your gut-brain connection.

When inflammation goes down, many people notice clearer thinking, calmer moods and more stable energy.

    The big reframe

    Aging isn’t the problem.

Your body isn’t “falling apart.”It’s responding to signals.

When you change the signals like food, stress, consistency, your body often responds with more ease. That’s not anti-aging. That’s pro-support.

Want a simple way to lower inflammation gently?

Initially I created this plan for myself and then I liked it so much I shared it with my clients. Now I want to offer it to everyone for FREE.  It works!

It’s called the FREE 7-Day Serotonin Reset Plan. Notice the word “FREE”. There’s no risk or money involved. Just a great tool to get you started in the right direction.  What does it do?  It’s designed to:

My partner was having a similar conversation yesterday. It's not the years that's aging us. It's how we live our lives and how we treat our bodies. I've been neglecting my gut health this past year.

This is a great post. Inflammation is an epidemic that many of us are facing and I do agree that our food is a huge part of the issue. Thanks for the info!

Great post! Inflammation is at the root of so many issues. I get challenged with rosacea and eczema. When I learned about how inflammatory foods can trigger outbreaks, I was able to improve my symptoms and clear things up. Cutting out meat and dairy lead to a big shift in my symptoms and gave me me an overall sense of wellbeing. That started me on my vegan journey.
